February 14th: Greg Sage “Livebearer Husbandry and Hobbyist Conservation”

Saturday, February 14th 2026, 1:00 PM (noon Social/Setup)
Greg Sage: “Livebearer Husbandry and Hobbyist Conservation”
SPU, Otto Miller Hall Room 109
Bonus talk! Sunday February 15, Seattle Public Library, Greenwood Branch, 12:30 PM.

Greg Sage, MEd., began selling guppies from his bedroom while in middle school in Ohio, and currently runs Select Aquatics, a fishroom of 100+ tanks from his home in Erie, Colorado. He has specialized in rare livebearers, particularly the goodeids for the past 17 years. His efforts to breed for healthy and consistent stock began around 1990. Over 47 different strains and species have been distributed to the hobby from his fishroom over the last 25 years.

Greg was chair of the American Livebearer Association from 2000-2004, has published numerous articles, and has a YouTube channel.

Greg's presentation “Livebearer Husbandry and Hobbyist Conservation” will use photos and stories to document the maintenance and development of many of the fish at Select Aquatics, and how keeping rare and endangered livebearers is very different than the pet store fish we are used to. After following many discussions with customers, Greg will also relate conservation efforts that the hobbyist can make to ensure these fish do not disappear from the hobby.

After the main presentation, stay for the Monthly Auction (sellers, pre-register your stuff here).

But that's not all! Want a deeper dive into livebearers? Greg will do a bonus presentation on Sunday, 12:30 PM at the Greenwood Branch of the Seattle Public Library. "Livebearers : No Longer Child's Play" was his first talk back in 2009, but has been updated and revised as the species kept in the specialty hobby have changed over the years.

Thanks to all who attended our record-breaking plant and fish auction this month, from the bidders and sellers, to the auctioneers, recorders, check-in table, runners and all the other volunteers. We hope everyone came home with something interesting for their aquariums. And a special thanks to the generous donation from Florida Aquatic Nurseries!

Thank You To Our Donors!

A big thank you to everyone who came out in force to our record-breaking general auction this year, especially to all our volunteers who worked tirelessly the whole day. And a special thanks to the sponsor stores and national companies.

Our big auctions still remain the primary source of income from the club, and their success means we can pay our rent and Internet video storage bills, bring in top quality speakers, and have nice prizes in our contests throughout the year. Thanks again!
